Haylou RS3 GPS Smartwatch Review

The Haylou RS3 GPS Smartwatch is a good looking smartwatch. The GPS works well and accurately. However, I encountered several bugs when using the Haylou Fun app. I had to reinstall the app twice until it worked. The sleep tracker is also not accurate. For a sale price of 3,000 PHP, the Haylou RS3 lacks a lot of features especially for the Haylou Fun companion app.

Design and Material

The Haylou RS3 design is attractive. It looks like a premium watch. It has a large round screen, two-side buttons, and bright display.

However, the screen has a thick border so the actual display is much smaller at 1.2 inch only. One of the side button is just an on-off control for the screen display. It can be rotated but that doesn’t scroll on the menus. It uses a proprietary charger with a magnetic contact. The Haylou RS3 does not support wireless charging.

The AMOLED screen is bright and clear. The screen touch control is also smooth and responsive.

Health Tracking and Notification Features

Haylou RS3 has the basic tracking features. It has a step counter, heart rate, stress levels, SpO2 monitoring, sleep levels, and calorie. The step counter looks accurate since they closely match the one with the Apple Watch Series 6 and the Huawei Watch 3.

The Haylou RS3 supports phone notifications for calls, messages, weather, music and selected apps. It has also sedentary reminders and weather.

The sleep tracker is not accurate. I was awake as early as 4:20 AM for an early morning ride. But the Haylou RS3 watch shows that I was asleep until 5:13 AM. I was on my bike already at that time. The Xiaomi Mi Watch got the sleep duration correctly.

GPS Accuracy and Location Tracking

Haylou RS3 uses a high precision Sony low-power GPS module. Getting the GPS fix took a while. It can be close to 1 minute in my usual spot.

The accuracy is similar to expensive GPS watches. A bike ride was logged as 25.19 KM on the Haylou RS3 and as 24.14 KM on the Suunto Spartan Sport WHR Baro. It is just a 50m difference which is great!

Power consumption on the watch is minimal when using the GPS for running and cycling. The watch battery life can last up to 25 hours on GPS based on the specs.

Haylou Fun App

There are several Haylou apps in the Google App Store. For the Haylou RS3, it is the Haylou Fun app. This is the same app used for the Haylou LS02 model.

The basic features are provided in the app like the heart rate, steps, calorie and sleep. The app can also be used as a separate activity tracker for running, walking and cycling.

Initially ,the GPS history not working. I cannot find the past activities in the app. I reinstalled the app and I was able to find my previous activities. However, there is a bug. I selected FAST WALKING on the watch but the Haylou Fun app records it under HIKING.

The workout activities has no Share option. But you can take a screenshot and share it instead. The GPS map is shown as a small portion at the bottom of the summary. You can zoom it but you cannot make the map bigger. The activity can’t be linked to Strava. It can be linked to Google Fit instead.

I hope that a new update of the Haylou Fun app will have better features for the GPS.

CPU and Battery Hungry

Another concern for the Haylou Fun App is the amount of CPU and battery it consumes. For the app to track the activities accurately it requires several phone permissions like location, run on background and more. As a result, it consumes a lot of CPU and battery.

I got an phone alert regarding the CPU use for the Haylou Fun App. I also checked the battery consumption and it ranks as #1 even if it was only running on the background. This is not an optimized app so I deleted the app after I got these notifications from my phone.

Haylous RS3 GPS Smartwatch Review Summary

The Haylou RS3 has the basic smartwatch features. The GPS accuracy for outdoor activities is comparable to my Suunto GPS Watch. However, the Haylou Fun App lacks the features easily available in many fitness apps. There is no share option and the map is shown as a small box at the bottom. You can’t view a bigger map to easily see your previous routes.

The Haylou Fun App also eats a lot of CPU and battery even if it only runs on the background. I need to charge my phone more often.

The smartwatch features of the Haylou RS3 are OK. But the app lacks several features for the GPS that outdoor activities like running and cycling needs. For 3,000 PHP, there are better and cheaper choices for a GPS smartwatch.

The Haylou RS3 is available at their official online stores in Shoppe and at Gadget Hunter in Lazada. The SRP is at 5,000 PHP but I got is on sale for 3,099 PHP only.

Haylou RS3 vs Umidigi URun

Umidigi URun is cheaper with an SRP of 2,990 PHP. It sometimes goes on sale for only 2,090 PHP.

The Umidigi URun looks like the smaller version of the Haylou RS3. Both have the traditional round shape watch with two side buttons. The Umidigi Urun has 44mm diameter case and a 1.1 inch LCD TFT Screen (240×240 pixels). The Haylou RS3 on the other hand is bigger and brighter with a 1.2 inch AMOLED screen at 390×390 pixels.

The Haylou Fun app for the Haylou RS3 is not good enough. The Umidigi Urun uses the PaiActive app which has a low 2.0 rating on Google Play store. Thus, both watches need to develop a better app.

Haylou RS3 vs Xiaomi Mi Watch

Xiaomi Mi Watch has a similar SRP at 4,990 PHP. The Mi Watch has a bigger 1.39 inch AMOLED screen. The watch features are more accurate than the Haylou RS3. The Xiaomi Wear app for the Mi Watch is a lot better with advanced analysis compared to the Haylou Fun. The Xiaomi Mi Watch is a definitely the better watch here.
